Being a cat owner can be messy and smelly. Although, in my opinion, cats are pretty clean animals, there’s still maintenance that must be done to keep your place clean and to smell nice.

There’s nothing more embarrassing than having guests over, and you overhear someone ask, “what’s that smell”?

In this article, I discuss:

  • the importance of using safe cleaning products
  • the best pet cleaning products for cat owners
  • make your own: DIY cleaning products

Use Safe Cleaning Products in your home

You want to make sure that any cleaning products used, whether it be for pet stains or all-purpose, around the house, are safe for your cat.

Think about how the overpowering smell of household cleaners can be overwhelming for you if the area you’re cleaning isn’t properly ventilated.  Some household cleaners can be lethal for cats if they breathe in the fumes or ingest by licking.

What to stay away from when choosing pet cleaning products

  • Ammonia
  • Bleach
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phenols

Cat pee ain’t no joke

Cat urine has additional amino acids (that dogs don’t have) present in their urine.  You will want to make sure that the pet cleaning product you use can breakdown the urea/uric acid crystals associated with cat urine.

For cat pee and poop, you want to use an excellent enzymatic or bio-based cleaning product to neutralize the odors and breakdown the stains.  An enzymatic product will be able to remove the uric acid/urea present in cat urine.

What to look for when choosing cat cleaning products

Choose products certified by Green Seal, an independent standard for green industries.  Also, look for the Environmental Protective Agency (EPA) seal of approval, indicating that the formula has been subjected to testing for being harmful.

Look for the following:

  • I prefer fragrance-free products.  But if you’re looking for the smell-goods look for products scented with essential oils or botanical extracts
  • look for products with tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide and citric acid as active ingredients
  • for window cleaners use products that have vinegar instead of ammonia
  • use mildly abrasive mineral such as feldspar and calcite if you need scrubbing action products like Comet or Ajax

Best Pet Cleaning Products for Cat Owners

There are cleaning products out there that are cat-friendly.  You want to make sure that any cleaning product is safe for your cat.

Be sure to read the label on cat cleaning products.  Even though it might say natural on the label doesn’t mean it’s really “natural.”

Make your DIY cleaning products

You can make your DIY cat stain and odor remover by mixing simple ingredients you probably already have in your household.

On fresh cat pee:

  • Blot (don’t rub) the cat pee spot with a paper towel to soak up the urine.
  • Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with a gallon of water.  The vinegar will neutralize the bacteria in cat urine and remove the smell.
  • Pour or spray the area with the solution.  Let it sit for a couple of minutes.
  • Blot the area again then let dry.
  • If the surface is carpeting, follow the steps above. Sprinkle baking soda on the spot, after drying.  Let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum.  Be sure to spot test surfaces first.
  • Suitable for use on old urine stains as well.
