The best litter box for multiple cats is the litter box(s) that meets your cats’ toilets needs.  It also helps if the design of the litter box makes maintaining it easier on you.

Buying a new cat litter box for your cats is important.  Litter box avoidance is the number one reason why cats end up being placed in shelters by owners.

Here’s Cat Mama’s recommendation for the absolute best Cat litter Box…EVER!

The heartbreaking part is that it’s not the cat’s fault.  If a cat is avoiding their litter box there’s a reason behind it.

So I’m writing this post to help you pick out the best multi-cat litter box solutions and the litter box ideas for multiple cats.  This buying guide will be very helpful in choosing a top-rated litter box for your multi-cat household that will make life easier for you.

Best Multi-cat Litter Box Solutions

I recommend using the following multi-cat litter box solutions for multi-cat households:

  • Each cat needs its own litter box
  • Each litter box should be placed in a different location
  • Make sure the cats have easy access to the litter boxes
  • Clean each litter box at least once daily
  • Be sure to use enough cat litter in each box – 2-3 inches deep or 3-4 inches if your cats like tossing around their cat litter.

Take notice of the way your cats use the litter box.  For example, some cats like urinating along the sides of the litter box.  So you might want to purchase a covered cat litter box or a  high sided cat litter box

Some cats like scratching and tossing their cat litter all over the place.  Again, a high sided covered litter box paired with a cat litter mat will help keep litter from being tracked all over the house.

For more recommendations on cat litter box mats read the article, “The Best Cat Litter Box Mats For Catching and Trapping Kitty Litter” from Catological by clicking here.

If either of your cats has short legs, or disabled or an older cat having a high sided or top entry cat litter box could cause your cats to urinate/poo outside of the box. In that case, you would want to purchase a litter box that would allow them to climb in and out without any problems.   I recommend KittyGoHere Senior Cat Litter Box.  Features include:

  • low opening
  • comes in 2 sizes (20 x 15 x 5 and 24 x 20 x 5)
  • great for cats with arthritis
  • the larger size could be used for a multiple cat household

What if I Live in a Small Apartment?

Okay, so what if I have 2 cats (maybe more) and I live in a small apartment?  There’s no room for one litter box let alone two litter boxes.  Purchasing one large or even jumbo cat litter box might work better.  I don’t recommend a corner litter box unless you can find a corner box that is an extra large covered litter box.

Living in a small apartment means you might have to be creative with where you place the litter box.  Wherever you end up placing it, it is important that you keep the cat litter box clean.  A nasty, smelly cat litter box makes your apartment seem nasty and smelly. I recommend cleaning the cat litter box at least twice a day or more depending on how often your cats use the litter box.  It will help to make your environment nicer if you make litter cleaning part of your daily cleaning routine.

My recommendation for the best litter box is the Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Box – I purchased this litter box for my multiple cat household. And yes, I live in a small one bedroom apartment!

(Read my post “Finding the Best Cat Litter Box for my Small Apartment”  by clicking here.)

The Catit Jumbo Hooded Cat Litter Box is perfect; whether you are using the multi-cat litter box solution (2 litter boxes) for cat owners with space or just one litter box for multi-cats household with no space.
